Casa Royale Palio Chiocchiola

Chiocciola, the Snail, has the motto “With slow and deliberate steps, the snail takes the field to triumph.” Its colors are red and yellow, trimmed with blue.

Its rival is Tartuca, while its allies are Istrice, Pantera and Selva.

After losing the Palio in 1896, angry members famously threw a statue of Saint Anthony, patron saint of horses, into a well. It remained there until 1910—and Chiocciola won the Palio the following year. Its most recent victory was in 1999.
